Reading Writing Connection, a local non-profit, had a problem.  To meet code, two new exit signs were required. They had the signs–but how to get them in the right place and properly powered to satisfy regulations?

A call to A Plus Electric’s Carl Evanson got it done.  Carl says “we dispatched a crew and now the signs are in the right place and lighted.”

Community commitment runs in the Evanson family.  Carl’s mother, Nancy, taught school for many years in the Napoleon district.  She saw first hand how many kids had big challenges with reading and writing, essential skills in life.  Upon retirement, she developed a reading program and named it “Bag of Books.”  Today it’s part of area school libraries.

Nancy Evanson was also a moving force in creating the Reading Writing Connection on Horton Road.  Recognizing parental anguish over kids who are having reading problems, they wanted to offer help. “We want our children to feel comfortable and successful when they read, and to love reading.  The Reading Writing Connection treats every child (and adult) as an individual and provides specialized instruction designed specifically for you or your child.”

Carl, his family, and technicians are all part of the local community, and care deeply for the place they call home.  A Plus Electric is dedicated to supporting the community’s growth, prosperity, and well-being of its residents.

As the area’s premiere electrician approaches its 12th anniversary, A Plus Electric has just initiated another major step forward.  The A Plus headquarters will soon move to the building formerly occupied by the In Good Company restaurant.  The new building is located on 127 just north of Jefferson Road intersection, Clark Lake.  The reason for the move?  More space for a growing business.

The A Plus Electric master electrician and owner is Carl Evanson.  “When we acquired our present building at the intersection of Hyde and Jefferson Road, our business increased.  People like to know their dealing with a solid company, and what’s more solid than brick and mortar?”

The increased space the new building offers is no small thing.  Carl says “we’re able to house major equipment and keep a larger inventory of parts.  That will cut down on service time and save customers money.”

A Plus Electric stays on the cutting edge in a rapidly changing world.  Along with standard electrical items, there is space for inventory of innovated electronics that create whole-home solutions.  Carl explains “we recently contracted with Lutron.  They are leaders in connecting lights, cameras, audio and video.  Homeowners have control through a simple remote at the house or anywhere in the world via an app on a smartphone.”

Access also improves. “Being on major thoroughfare saves time in arriving at a customer’s home.  They know they can depend on us for quick, quality and affordable service.  This move boosts each one of those important qualities.”

The staff is happy about the move, too.  Carl is hearing “they look forward to more space for customer care and follow-through.

Modifications will transform the restaurant into a perfect setting.  Work begins soon, and we’ll keep you up to date on progress.

Veterans Day becomes more real when you get to know someone who has served.  Marc is an electrician with A Plus Electric.  As a sergeant in the Marines, he saw first-hand what our military does on behalf of our country.  He recalls the time his group evacuated the U.S. embassy in Albania.  “Terrorists had threatened to blow it up, and our job was to convert a soft target into a hard target.”  Other times his outfit pursued precision raids. “Our orders were to go after high value targets and come back with intel.”  Put together the Albanian experience and time spent in Africa and you begin to get clarity on what our military means to us. Marc’s years of service illustrate a willingness to devote part of his life to our country and take risks to life and limb along the way.

This Veterans Day is an opportunity to salute Marc and the thousands of others who have sacrificed for the United States.  Do you have a veteran close by?  November 11th, or any day, is a good time to say “thank you.”

Here are some frightening statistics about fires:

• Three out of five home fire deaths result from fires in properties without working smoke alarms.
• More than one-third (38 percent) of home fire deaths result from fires in which no smoke alarms are present.
• The risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms.

A fresh battery in your smoke alarm could save your life.  And your smoke alarm won’t wake you unnecessarily with loud “low-battery” beeps.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch until 11 pm for these counties: Jackson, Branch, Hillsdale, Lenawee, Monroe, Livingston, Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair, and Washtenaw.

“At 428 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm near Burlington, or 9 miles north of Coldwater, moving east at 55 mph.  Dime size hail and winds in excess of 40 mph with downed tree limbs will be possible with this storm.

Locations impacted include…Homer… Union City… Burlington…Spring Arbor… Pulaski… Concord…Horton… Tekonsha… Hanover…

Local businesses support local communities.  That’s certainly true of A Plus Electric.  The bonus is that it can be fun!  Today A Plus Master Electrician Carl Evanson and wife Abby, were at Clark Lake’s Beerfest, both as sponsors and as workers.  This fundraiser offered those who pay the price of admission the opportunity to select samples from a huge array of beers–as many as 120 different brews.   The event was held at Clark Lake’s Eagle Point from noon to 4 pm.

Those who love the Clark Lake Spirit Trail benefit from events like Beerfest.  The Trail is a 7.3 mile path that allows cyclists, runners and walkers to follow the circumference of the lake.  Along the way, they travel through traditional lake neighborhoods, rural settings, canopied forest, and get views of Clark Lake’s waters. Maintaining the Trail primarily rests upon volunteers.  But there are infrastructure improvements that require financial investment.  Recent examples include the construction of an extension between Rita and Grand Boulevard at the east end and installing new surface and drainage along the post office at the west end.  The people in these slide shows, by attending or working the event, help get the job done.

The people local businesses employ and serve know this–being part of the community has its rewards. There couldn’t be better evidence of this than this weekend.  Take, for example, Run Clark Lake.  Now in its 42nd year, the event attracts people from all over.  Visitors support the local economy. Local participants who pay an entry fee support local projects.  Run Clark Lake benefits the Clark Lake Spirit Trail, a 7.3 mile path.  As users walk, run or bike around the lake, they venture through traditional lake neighborhoods, a canopied forest, rural settings, and are treated to the water colors of Clark Lake.  The Trail is maintained by volunteers, but some infrastructure repairs and improvements require hiring contractors. Without fundraisers like Run Clark Lake, the Trail would only be a dream.

A Plus Electric’s Carl Evanson and his family were part of Run Clark Lake this weekend. In addition to the 12K run and 5K run and walk, there is a 3/4K Kids Run.  Carl and his wife, Abby, brought Helena and Tom to participate.  As photos below suggest, kids who were there left with a sense of accomplishment and a smile on their face.

People who have never experienced summer in Michigan miss something special.  Local businesses and local communities know it!

One of the great things about local businesses and their teams is how they constantly connect to their communities.  This Sunday marked another successful Kids Triathlon.  Kids 12 and under compete in three events–swimming, biking and running. A Plus Electric’s master electrician, Carl Evanson, brought his three children to the site so they could “warm up for next year when they can participate.”

The Kids Triathlon takes place at the Clark Lake Yacht Club, and is a joint effort of the Yacht Club and the Clark Lake Raft-O-Rama Committee.

Up for grabs were the top three awards–gold, silver, and bronze.

Since the event takes place at Clark Lake, the swim competition is a natural.  Check out the video below as Event Director Dan Omo gives instructions to participants.  Continue to watch to see the competitors take to the water.

Kids of all ages played on the giant blow ups brought in by the Yacht Club.  Others enjoyed a bite to eat or just soaked in a stunningly beautiful day at Clark Lake.
