Saturday, January 29th, Clark Lake will host two events. The day starts with the Fallen Outdoors fishing tournament at 8:30 am, launching from the Clark Lake Yacht Club. Fallen Outdoors serves veterans, who will be the stars of the hours. Prizes will be awarded for biggest, smallest, and most. Then an event you don’t often see at a fishing tournament–a wedding! Turns out the organizer, Ron Smith, is also a minister. Details on the Fallen Outdoors Facebook page.

Later on, more than 165 crazies will jump into the frigid waters of Clark Lake, but for a cause. “They are freezin’ for a reason.” It’s all part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Michigan. They have a lofty goal–to raise $35,000. Register online now or at the event, 12:30 pm on Saturday, January 29th. The plunging starts at 2 pm. The event takes place at the Eagle’s Nest Bar & Grill, 1200 Eagle Point Road. That’s a good thing, because the jumpers will definitely need to warm up.

Just as power returned to one area, another was hit by an outage. A branch fell on a transformer at Jefferson and Sandy Beach Roads, Clark Lake. There was a pop, flash, and the lights went out.

Reviewing the days events, it’s worth knowing about three resources. Consumers Energy is responsible for the powerline to your house. Once it touches your residence via the mast, it’s your responsibility. If the mast is damaged, you’ll need a licensed electrician. The second resource is Consumers Energy’s outage center. You can sign up for text and emails to tell you about your outage including the expected time of restoration. At the same site, you can view the outage map that shows the extent of outages at any given time.

The YMCA is no stranger to the Jackson area.  It’s been a Jackson bedrock for 124-years, and today this non-profit serves nearly 1,000 community members every day. The new building will enable the YMCA to enhance existing programs, develop new ones, and expand services.

Consumers points out:

·         Never use a generator in an attached garage, basement, enclosed patio or near any air intakes. Doing so could cause a generator to produce hazardous levels of carbon monoxide, an odorless, colorless and deadly gas.

·         Consumers Energy will trim or remove trees interfering with electric restoration activities. Once safe to do so, clean-up of debris from tree trimming or removal during a storm emergency is the responsibility of individual property owners.

·         In some cases, the mast which holds the electric service wires to a customer’s home or business may have been damaged or torn away. Crews will reconnect the wires to a home, but only a licensed electrician can repair or replace a mast or a cable.

The home crowd enjoyed a salute to our nation’s independence Saturday night. This annual fireworks display has become a tradition at the lake, courtesy of the Menard’s family (not the same as the store). The event unfolds under the watchful eye of Evelyn Menard, who is now 96. The rest of the family helps launch the fireworks from their dock along Clark Lake’s Ocean Beach. Rafts and boats watch the event from the east end of the lake.
